I am a Tasmanian native who grew up amongst the very rural farming, sawmilling & fishing communities of Tasmania's north-west.
My first conscious photographic influences came from about the age of eleven or so, in becoming aware of the landcape work of Ansel Adams, and following through to the images created by the highly respected Tasmanian wilderness photographers - Olegas Truchanas & Peter Dombrovskis.
This influence, along with trips into the north west rainforests, and to the Southern Ocean coastline, led me at that young age, to get my first real inkling of how special and unique certain parts of Tasmania are.
As a photographer I love capturing the under appreciated natural beauty of my local area. It never ceases to amaze me how close I live to such bountiful variety. From the magnificent rainforests of the Tarkine interspersed with button grass & heath plains to the beautiful long beaches of the north coast framed by headlands to the rugged wild beauty and savage seas of the west coast beaches, quiet little coves and savage rocks. From snow covered wilderness peaks and rolling majestic farmland, gravel roads, bush tracks & old buildings, to little creeks only the locals know, and rivers coming out of wilderness headwaters, the whole state abounds in a landscape photographers wonderland.
As well as this, I also dabble in other genres of photography, exploring form and shape, light and shadow, glimpses in time.
I get lost on the forest floor in macros for hours. I enjoy experimenting with the starkness of urban photography. Or with the soft play of light and shadow on the human form in fine art nude & portraiture, that I find surprisingly similar to landscape. I take long exposures with shutter times measured in minutes, and explore the simplicity of black and white work.
I select documentary projects or personal interest, eg capturing some of the unique shacks and decaying old buildings dotted all around Tasmania. I capture the galaxy & the southern aurora, birds & wildlife, or action sports.
I hope you too can enjoy my images.
